  • Marie Lenclos is a French painter who lives and works locally. She was one of the first artists to exhibit in Copper Beech Café’s sun-filled space in 2017, and is delighted to be back for a second round. Marie’s painting is all about celebrating the beauty of familiar and everyday spaces we may not notice as we rush about: “My paintings capture moments of light and order within the urban chaos. Often mundane or domestic, the landscapes or interiors I paint present themselves to me during my journeys to or from work across South London. For years and years, long before I started painting every day, I was aware of my surroundings and conscious of the way I was looking at the city around me. As a documentary video maker for around 12 years, I got used to ‘framing’ things all the time, even without a camera. I’d be walking around and suddenly see something and think: this would make a good shot. Now, I see something and I think: there is a painting in this.”
