Come along to find out what SLWA have been up to over the last year, plans for the future and to have your say. This is also a great opportunity to meet new members and say hello to old members, to talk about what you have been up to and to get enthusiastic for the next SLWA year ahead.


We would like to introduce the new Trustees that have volunteered to help advise SLWA on governance and support us as we move forward.  We would like to welcome them to SLWA, you will be able to meet them at the AGM. Here is a little about them below:


Rosie CampbellRosie Campbell is a South London local art enthusiast, with a Fine Art degree.  A working life spent in qualitative market research and business psychology (now semi-retired) means she brings valuable marketing and communication experience to her Trustee role at SLWA. Rosie has a MSc in Systemic Psychology and ILM Certified Business Coach. Chaired the AQR (2007-2010) 35+ years as co-proprietor of Campbell Keegan Ltd, a qualitative market and social research company; has specialised in many women’s markets and conducted over 150 research projects related to cultural and social policy strands. Rosie’s Clients include (commercial) WeightWatchers, L’Oreal, P&G, Unilever, M&S and (Government Departments) Sports Council, Arts Council, Cabinet Office, NHS, HEA, FSA, DWP. Fellow of the Market Research Society and RSA and one of the founders of Demos, the centre-left think tank. She is also a Samaritan Listening Volunteer and Marketing Support for LGS Samaritans.


Charlotte ChungCharlotte Chung works in policy, research and campaigns, with an expertise in social enterprise and small business. Having worked for the national body, Social Enterprise UK, for the best part of five years, she has a particular interest in social investment and sustainable business eco-systems. She is a firm advocate in businesses’ ability to be natural drivers in building better, more equal, societies; producing social value in tandem with profit. Charlotte moved on to join the global policy team for ACCA – the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants – as a Senior Policy Advisor, specialising in SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).  At ACCA, she oversaw research initiatives covering a diverse range of topics from alternative finance to high-growth businesses. Most recently though, no longer content to watch from the side-lines, she took the plunge to get involved in the 2015 general election,  joining a Liberal Democrat’s campaign team. The best decision she has made in a long time…despite the outcome!


Martha LeeMartha Lee is the Exhibitions Programmer at Conway Hall. For the last four years she has organized and curated a variety of exhibitions, ranging from art by established artists to artists who are looking to hold their first London exhibition. Martha’s previous experience includes organising an annual art exhibition as part of Refugee Week entitled ‘Art in Exile’, a collaboration of refugee artists whose art interpreted their experiences of exile. Martha also comes from a family of artists and working on art exhibitions has been part of everyday life from a young age. She has been a keen follower of South London Women Artists for several years and had the opportunity to work more closely with us during our four month residency Finders Keepers at Conway Hall between Nov 2014 and Feb 2015. She believes SLWA are doing valuable work in promoting and enabling women in what has historically been a male domain and that women need that space in order to develop and grow as artists.  She is looking forward to becoming more involved with SLWA in her role as a Trustee.


Penny McLeanPenny McLean is Campaigns and Events Officer at the House of Commons, where she works to inspire and connect people with Parliament and democracy. Before this, Penny worked at the Refugee Council supporting refugee communities across England in the key areas of effective communication, campaigning and organisational development. Prior to working in the voluntary and public sector, she worked in the media/arts industry for a number of years in a variety of creative roles at Films of Record, BBC Radio Times, the Film Council and London Comedy Festival. Born in Scotland, Penny has a Postgraduate Diploma in Television Production from Bournemouth University media school and a BA Hons in French and Linguistics from York St John University. Penny is also Vice Chair of Migrant Voice and is passionately committed to enabling migrants to positively influence issues that affect the quality of their lives and to positively influence the polarised debate on immigration.

Space-Time Continuum, Finders Keepers Losers Weepers

What will we find in the future? What will we want to keep from today? What would you like to lose? Free, fun family art workshops, aimed at families with children between 7 and 11 during the February half term holidays. The workshops will offer the opportunity for parents and children to participate in a joint activity.


Finders Keepers Losers Weepers is the title of a residency by South London Women Artists Collaborative at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London WC2, 4 November 2014 to 28 February 2015. The residency responds to the history of this fascinating institution, Conway Hall is a landmark institution of London's independent intellectual, political and cultural life.


The artist led workshops called SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM will focus on visions of the future. Together, families will:


* Follow the Art Trail and discover how its ideas have informed the exhibition
* Talk to the artists about their work
* Make individual time capsules that will become part of the exhibition


2 hour session workshops will take place on Tuesday 17th February 2015 between 10.00-12.00pm and 1-3pm

In preparation for South London Women Artists residency at Conway Hall 4 November 2014 - 28 February 2015 SLWA artists Jackie Brown and Moira Jarvis visited UCL Academy to run a workshop prior to the students' visit in November. Focussing on the ideas and theme behind the site-specific exhibition, Finders Keepers Losers Weepers: archaeology of mind and memory, the workshop kicked off with a collaborative mind map to explore student’s ideas on the concepts of possession, loss, time, space. A wide range of ideas emerged and these were developed into paper time capsules.
The time capsules will be exhibited in the Brockway Room at Conway Hall from 4 November to 5 December 2014 to communicate with visitors how the students feel about the concept of time. The capsules will also be sealed in a box in Conway Hall to be opened in the future - a students' collaborative time capsule.

The gallery's building, a beautiful old cottage, is located in the yard next to Archbishop's Park and opposite an art cafe. It was a Buddhist centre for many years and is directly opposite St Thomas' Hospital, SE1

Gabriel Fine Art is located within 5 min walk from Lambeth North and Waterloo tube stations, on the back of St Thomas' hospital, close to Westminster Bridge and next to the old burial ground. It is also in close proximity to Make Space Studios, which are placed on the site of the old train station used in 1848 for transporting the bodies of Cholera epidemic - all those connections with death are present there

We will print an information sheet in colour, containing one image

per artist and 2 short paragraphs of text (see below)




The gallery is big enough to allow 30-35 artists to take part in the exhibition, depending on the sizes of work

Each artist can submit 2 or 3D work (up to 1 m) or 2-4 small works, filling the space up to 1m square

OR 1 3D work up to 50cm in any direction

OR a performance proposal

OR poetry reading


Please also include 2 short paragraphs of text (up to 60 words total): the first paragraph will deal with the artist's approach to the subject of 'Death and Transition' (it can be a short quotation) and the second will contain short information about the artist

Governance and constitution

SLWA is a company limited by guarantee and will be seeking registration with the Charity Commission in the next two months.

The company is governed by its Articles of Association and currently has 6 Directors who are responsible for the running of the organisation.  The membership has no constitutional role and the Directors are the only formal members of the Company.  However, they consult with the members regularly, especially on any major developments or changes proposed to the organisation.  Following registration with the Charity Commission, the Directors will also be the Trustees of the charity.


What we are looking for

We are currently seeking individuals who share our vision, are passionate about promoting women artists and have the time and skills to support and guide SLWA as it starts a new chapter as a registered charity.

We would particularly like to hear from people with any of the following skills and experience:

  • previous experience of trusteeship
  • fundraising and organisational development
  • sales and/or donor development
  • press and PR – particularly in the art world


You should also be able to demonstrate:

  • a clear commitment to the visual arts (this may be through your professional or voluntary experience)
  • a willingness to devote the necessary time and care to the role
  • an awareness of the responsibilities of trusteeship
  • a clear commitment to equality and diversity in the promotion of the arts, women artists and public education in visual arts.

Trustees will meet at least quarterly and will be expected to support SLWA by attending other events and exhibitions as well as being active ambassadors for the organisation, supporting the management committee and providing ad hoc advice by phone or email as necessary.

Previous trustee experience would be helpful but is not essential as a full induction will be provided.

We are seeking up to 6 trustees.  These roles are voluntary.

Who we are

South London Women Artists is a community of women artists based in South London, who present an inspirational portfolio online and through exhibitions.

South London Women Artists was launched by the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery in June 2008.

It offers a website on which women artists living or working south of the river can post a profile about their work.


What we do

South London Women Artists

  • supports the professional development and careers of its members by helping them access wider opportunities
  • promotes artist-led projects and communal activities such as talks, workshops and visits, and exhibitions of members’ works within a strong curatorial framework

The SLWA website enables members to display their work to new audiences. It is a resource open to all to access arts opportunities. Exhibitions bring the work of SLWA to the wider community and increase public awareness of art produced by women.

SLWA infuses all of its projects with personality, energy, passion and intelligence.

The idea for SLWA came from a lecture series on Women Artists which Dulwich Picture Gallery ran in June 2008. Few people can name women artists from before the 19th century since their role as professional women was strictly limited. Today women artists have achieved equal prominence with men. SLWA was created to celebrate this and to give prominence to women artists living or working in the London area.

SLWA welcomes all who have an interest in and love of art.

What a triumph! The Private View drew lots of visitors on an otherwise bleak night to see how thirty-three artists interpreted a concept and responded to a space imbued with history and intellectual enquiry. Guests were supplied with a map which signposted a trail of discovery over three floors of the wonders of the art on show.

At the heart of this exciting exhibition was the adage: Finders Keepers Losers Weepers. Each participating South London Women Artist was invited to respond to this. The results were as varied as the individual minds and experiences of the artists.

3Usually, exhibitions are fitted into galleries or other premises, but this one was not only inspired by the host-building, it became part of the building, of its fabric. Standing proud in an alcove in the entrance stood Jackie Brown’s Harebrained. With Each Smell of the Rose by Marnie Pitts was to be found in the skylight. In the balcony of the Main Hall Melissa Budasz covered a pair of circular windows with Neuroplastic Pathways and Sex My Brain and positioned opposite a further two circular windows are The Nights I & II by Chantal Gillingham. Then, there’s Unlocked by Gillian Best Powell where the starting point was the ‘masculine’ doors. Beata Kozlowska took the building’s history as her inspiration for Con-tain Map-Ariadna saw…

Other work, such as The Skater by Kim Thornton and Wednesday: The Library by Christine Landreth arose from the building. The first is a trio of photographs of performative art taken in the hall and the other a series of rubbings of the textures of the building. Julie Bennett’s Selfies began with taking selfies in Conway Hall, later making them into paintings which look down on you from the balcony. Composting and Natural Patterns of Thought is nearby. This piece, made by Moira Jarvis, reflects how we ‘compost’ ideas. Gin Dunscombe, The Conway Hall Sitooterie, converted a marble bench into a comfortable place to be, its cushions emblazoned with images of protest. In Your Place by Maria Beddoes is close by and reflects the narrative of her family.

4Visitors going to the basement saw an installation: Constellation at Conway Hall created by Caroline Underwood, and a surprise constructed by Leoni Cronin, in addition to her Hair and Eggs (April Full Moon 2014). Bula Chakravarty-Agbo reflects that all living souls are on a journey in Ancient Wisdom, The Spirit of the Condor and in Transition.

Childhood is time lost to all adults and impressions of this were rendered in Send Me a Postcard by Karin Dahlbacka. A half-remembered dream may account for Rocking Horse by Pia Goddard. A recapturing of the past is played out in Jennie Merrell’s portraits of SLWA artists as young girls: Before the World Was Made – Chantal.

Some things are lost, others are found. Reema Dreaming presented Lost: Found. Remembered, made from found photos. Edori Fertig's gave us Lost Family, which arose from a bag of photos bought in Deptford market. Chrissy Thirlaway celebrated unplanned finding and loss in Consequences. The Cabinet of Lost Souls is Lisa Brown’s response to found objects and their stories.

Memory is an important factor in this exhibition. Pat Keay’s collage, Lines pays homage to her father who suffers from dementia. Eithne Twomey’s Half Model Tales touches on the death of her father. Exercises in Patience, Accuracy and Taste by Lucy Soni is a reinvention of the forgotten. Memories of summer are tangible in Quantum Sculpture ‘Plastic Consciousness… Enlightenment’ by Jasmine Pradissitto.

Of course, politics is integral to the exhibition. Susan Wood’s Chains and Freedom on the handrail of the staircase echoed the suffragettes’ chains, and Laura Moreton-GriffithsA Hyena in a Petticoat informed us that this was how Walpole described Mary Wollstonecraft.

Paola Minekov questioned the impact of technology on identity in Pixel – Looking Through a Screen. Carol Misch took on identity by exploring who we are without history in Piece of Mind. So-called weeds were brought indoors by Liz Charsley-Jory’s cyanotypes: Garlic mustard and buttercup.

Interactive work meant you might take a ‘friend’ card from the trolley presented by Kate Bowe in Slight of Hand or take home a seed ‘bomb’, part of Jane Higginbottom’s artwork, Wardian Case. Or a book if you visited the Sitooterie.

The work and the venue reinforced and reinvented each other. A nice symbiosis. This is an exhibition that will speak to many people.
